Israel found itself in a difficult and complex situation following the War of Independence. The IDF was left with few commanders with battle experience. Handling the young state's economy while receiving the many immigrants from Europe and the Arab nations seemed an impossible undertaking. Security threats along Israel's borders tormented its citizens and threatened the peripheral settlements. The IDF's initial military reprisal operations were a testimony to its weakness. The answer: Unit 101. The unit was established on the initiative of Colonel Mishael Shacham, and Major Ariel Sharon was called upon to command it. This critical decision was made by Chief of General Staff Mordechai Maklef. Another important decision was made by his successor Moshe Dayan, who elected to unite Unit 101 under the 890th Paratroopers' Battalion.
